In the notes made by Soemantri Widagdo and Bruce W. Carpenter in a volume entitled Lempad’s Style and Technique, this inlay is thought to be a design for a lampshade. The work was probably commissioned by a Westerner, and the most likely candidate is the Dutch sculptor Louis Simon Willem van der Noordaa, who worked with Lempad in the mid-1930s supervising a group of sculptors carving boulders.
